Students at Hillcrest Shifnal specialist school use their talents to kickstart fundraising for Birmingham Children’s Hospital
The discovery of a year 9 student’s hidden DJ talents has kickstarted a wave of fundraising initiatives at Hillcrest Shifnal School in Shropshire, with pupils raising over £200 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital since the start of 2018.
Hillcrest Shifnal is an independent specialist school run by Hillcrest and part of Outcomes First Group, providing education, care and therapeutic services to children aged 7 to 19 with social, emotional and mental health difficulties. The school’s person-centred approach to education plays to pupils’ strengths and helps to bring out the best in them – in this case a teenager’s talents as a budding DJ were spotted by staff and he was encouraged to perform at the school disco. The pupil chose to use this platform as an opportunity to raise money for his preferred charity, Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Following on from this success, Hillcrest has continued its fundraising efforts for the Hospital. Two pupils delighted audiences with their singing performances live on stage at the European Telford Market, and a Grand Charity Brunch was organised by the school as a further fundraiser.
The total amount raised was donated to the hospital on 22nd March and the following week, the budding DJ and one of the teachers from Shifnal school took a tour of Birmingham Children’s Hospital with a representative from the charity.
David Coles, the school’s new Head Teacher said: “Students who attend Hillcrest Shifnal School have a range of complex needs, some will have associated learning difficulties and typically all will have encountered negative educational experiences or disruption, consequently lacking confidence.
“The fundraising has created a huge sense of achievement amongst the school and the students are proud to have been a part of a project they know will benefit others who are in need.
“A huge well done to everyone for their efforts and may this great work continue to help many others in less fortunate positions.”
Miranda Williams, Public Fundraising Manager at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital Charity, adds: “It’s great to see local schools such as Hillcrest Shifnal School host fundraising events to raise funds for our hospital. We’d like to say a big thank you to all of the pupils and staff who hosted the events as well as the people who attended and donated to our charity throughout. The money raised will help us in our plight to help make a difference to our 90,000 sick kids and their families.”
