To celebrate Downs Syndrome Awareness Week we are sharing Morris’ story.
Morris lives at Hillcrest Beachlands, a West Sussex residential home for adults with Learning Disabilities. Morris has lived there for over 14 years and is looked after by the Home Manager Jackie Cook, and her staff team.
“In his previous placement he was challenging and things didn’t go very well. Since hes moved in with us, we have given him a reason to believe in us. And he is doing really well.” Says Jackie.
His hobbies include shopping for clothes, swimming and going for a car rides. He is also a fan of comedies. And is an entertainer himself! With a really good sense of humour.
He visits his mum once a week and sees his sister as well. Sadly Morris’ dad passed away in February. “He had played a huge part in Morris’ life. ” Jackie said. “Staff took him to the funeral where he helped to scatter his ashes and say Goodbye. Although a sad day the staff were really proud of Morris. He understood what was happening and was able to join the rest of his family in saying goodbye.”
Morris is 43 this October and in his time at Beach Road has made huge progress. He does many activities, has improved his communication skills and has become more independent in his daily life skills. He likes to learn and practice new words and also enjoys being out in the community. He has holiday each year which support from staff.
